Moving to the cloud?

Do It Right the First Time.

Migrate your GIS and operational intelligence environment to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud — safely, on schedule, and with zero data loss. Black Thunder's cloud architects manage every stage, from discovery through go-live and beyond.

New Cloud Deployments

Standing up a fresh GIS environment directly in the cloud from scratch

On-Premises to Cloud

Lifting your existing GIS infrastructure off local servers into AWS, Azure, or GCP

Cloud-to-Cloud Migration

Moving from one cloud provider to another with full data integrity checks

Air-Gapped & Secure Deployments

Isolated migrations for classified, sensitive, or operationally critical environments

✽  CLOUD MIGRATION

We Bridge the Gap Between On-Premises and Cloud

A failed or poorly planned GIS cloud migration can mean days of operational downtime, lost data, and broken integrations. We eliminate that risk entirely. Our migration specialists become a natural extension of your team - handling every technical complexity while you stay focused on your mission.

Whether you're moving from physical servers for the first time, shifting between cloud providers, or deploying an entirely new GIS environment, we've done it before and we'll do it right.

  • Detailed rollback plan prepared before day one
  • Security-hardened paths for sensitive GIS data
  • Native SAIMOS integration post-migration
  • Parallel-run testing before full cutover
  • Staff training and knowledge transfer included
  • Full compliance documentation on handover

✽  FULL SCOPE

Everything Covered, End to End

We manage all technical aspects of your GIS migration - so you don't have to coordinate between vendors, IT teams, and consultants. One team, full accountability.

1 GIS Infrastructure

ArcGIS Enterprise Components

Full migration of your complete ArcGIS environment including all server components, configurations, and integrations.

  • ArcGIS Server
  • Portal for ArcGIS
  • ArcGIS Data Store
  • ArcGIS Web Adaptor
  • Enterprise geodatabases
  • Published services & layers
2 Data & Integrations

Geospatial Data & Pipelines

Complete transfer of your geospatial datasets, datasets, and third-party integrations with integrity validation at every step.

  • Geospatial datasets & geodatabases
  • Raster & imagery libraries
  • FME automation & workflows
  • API connections & endpoints
3 Security & Access

Identity, Permissions & Compliance

Migration of your entire access control framework — users, groups, roles, and authentication configurations — with zero permission gaps.

  • LDAP / Active Directory migration
  • SAML & SSO configurations
  • User groups & role assignments
  • SSL certificate migration
  • Firewall & port configurations
  • Compliance framework alignment
4 DNS & Networking

Network & Connectivity

Full DNS cutover, networking configuration, and connectivity testing to ensure your GIS environment is reachable by all authorised users and systems from day one.

  • DNS record migration & cutover
  • VPN & private network setup
  • Load balancer configuration
  • Port & firewall rule migration
  • CDN configuration where applicable
  • Latency & performance testing
5 Testing & Validation

Quality Assurance & Sign-Off

Rigorous parallel-run testing before any cutover. Nothing goes live until every service, integration, and dataset has been validated against your pre-migration baseline.

  • Full service functionality testing
  • Data integrity verification
  • Performance benchmarking
  • User acceptance testing support
  • Security penetration review
  • Client sign-off before go-live
6 Handover & Support

Post-Migration Hypercare

The migration doesn't end at go-live. Our 30-day hypercare period provides dedicated support to address any post-launch issues before transitioning to standard managed services.

  • 30-day dedicated hypercare period
  • Priority incident response
  • Staff training & knowledge transfer
  • Full technical documentation
  • Monitoring dashboard handover
  • Transition to managed services (optional)

Most GIS cloud migrations take between 3 and 8 weeks depending on the complexity of your environment, the volume of data, and the number of services being migrated. Smaller, straightforward on-premises to cloud migrations can be completed in as little as 2 weeks. Larger enterprise environments with complex integrations, classified data requirements, or multiple ArcGIS Enterprise deployments may take 6–12 weeks. We provide a precise timeline estimate during the assessment phase before any work begins.

We use a parallel-run approach — your existing system stays live throughout the entire migration. Only at the final DNS cutover stage (typically scheduled during a low-traffic window, such as overnight or on a weekend) is there any service interruption, and this is usually less than 30 minutes. We monitor the cutover in real time and have rollback procedures ready to execute instantly if needed.

The right platform depends on your organisation's existing agreements, regional data residency requirements, compliance obligations, and technical preferences. For government and public sector organisations in the UAE, Microsoft Azure (which has UAE North and UAE Central regions) is often preferred for its local data residency and government compliance certifications. AWS also has strong GIS and Esri support. We will recommend the best fit after the assessment and can work with any of the two platforms. We have no commercial preference - our job is to find the best technical solution for you.

Yes. We have experience designing and executing migrations for sensitive operational environments including government agencies, defence-adjacent organisations, and critical infrastructure operators. These migrations follow strict data handling protocols, involve no cloud-to-internet exposure, and result in fully isolated deployment environments. If your environment requires an air-gapped or secure enclave deployment, we handle this as a specialised project track with additional security controls throughout.

We prepare and test a rollback plan before any migration work begins — this is non-negotiable on every project. If a serious issue arises during execution, we immediately revert to your original environment, which remains fully operational throughout the process. We then diagnose the issue, adjust the plan, and re-attempt at a scheduled time. Our 24/7 availability during active migration windows means any incident is detected and acted on within minutes, not hours.

It starts with a no-obligation discovery call - typically 45 to 60 minutes. We'll ask about your current environment, your goals, your timeline, and any specific requirements. From there, we'll outline a proposed approach and provide a cost estimate. If you're satisfied, we schedule the assessment phase and get to work.
